Description

OPT-NC once again celebrates high-level sports training centres based in New Caledonia with the issue of this new 120 XPF stamp designed by Thierry Mordant.

This year, OPT-NC turns the spotlight on the Pôle France para athletics centre in Noumea, New Caledonia’s only Pôle France training centre, currently headed by Olivier Deniaud, who is also the French Para Sport Team coach.

This Pôle France was granted official status in February 2018 by Minister for Sport Laura Flessel and comprises ten New Caledonian athletes, including several European champions and members of the Ministry of Sport “Elite” list, who compete in wheelchair racing, standing shot put, seated javelin throwing, blind running and amputee running events.

At the last European Para Athletics Championships held in Berlin in August 2018, these athletes carried off 16 medals, including 8 gold medals - half of the gold medals won by the French team!  Our champions are New Caledonia’s pride and joy and set a wonderful example of hope and determination for all the country’s young disabled athletes.

The Pacific Games scheduled for July 2019 and the World Championships in November 2019 are the next priorities for the training centre, which has recently become part of the French national “Grand Insep” framework, providing the centre’s athletes with access to the International Sport and Expertise Centre in Koutio and the National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance in Paris. Perfect conditions for top level training!
