Description

As a fitting tribute celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the most eagerly awaited multi-ethnic annual event in Noumea, OPT-NC is proud to present this new 75 XPF stamp issue… as brightly colourful as the Carnival itself!

Following a few years in abeyance, the Noumea Carnival was revived in 1987 by the Association des Jeunes Animateurs Calédoniens (Association of Young New Caledonian Entertainers) chaired by Brigitte Pasco. The procession of flamboyant floats and carnival performers and participants parading along Anse Vata Bay was such a resounding success that the carnival became an annual attraction. In 1991, the City of Noumea took over the task of organisation, with Brigitte Pasco continuing as event supervisor in her role as Head of Cultural Projects at the Department of Culture, Heritage and Development for the City of Noumea.

Since 1992, for reasons of convenience and safety, the Carnival Procession has wended its way along the major arteries of downtown Noumea, with an ever-growing number of lavishly decorated and endlessly inventive floats embodying the true spirit of revelry at the heart of this multicultural extravaganza. Around 1,500 performers and revellers spend months getting ready for the event (building and decorating floats, choreographing stylish performances, creating songs, music and costumes…), and an average of 25,000 spectators flock from all over New Caledonia to join in the festivities.

This year, the procession will set off from Place Bir-Hakeim at 6 p.m. on Saturday 16 September 2017 and head along the streets to central square Place des Cocotiers, where a sumptuous firework display launched from Noumea Townhall roof will bring this exuberant celebration of urban community life to a sparkling close.
