With this 110 XPF stamp issue, designed by Maré born artist Roly Waïa, OPT-NC is proud to present the second in the series of stamp issues paying tribute to New Caledonia’s rural fairs. Following last year’s stamp in honour of Farino’s Candlenut Worm Fair, pride of place this time goes to the fair celebrating Maré’s delicious avocados.
First launched in the 1990s by a handful of local producers then established as a local event by Great Chief Nidoïsh Naisseline, the Avocado Fair is held every May on the island of Maré and is one of New Caledonia’s flagship farming and cultural festivals.
Hosted by the Nece Tribe in an idyllic setting and organised by the "Pahnamenenge" committee, in partnership with Destination Iles Loyauté (Loyalty Islands tourism board), Maré Townhall and the Loyalty Islands Province, the Fair is a celebration of Maré’s meltingly subtle and deliciously fragrant avocados.
Over three days, the Maré islanders, famed for their warm hospitality, friendliness and culinary expertise, invite visitors to savour local specialities and join in traditional and sight-seeing activities: luscious avocado-based recipes, refreshment stalls, handicrafts, a farmers’ market overflowing with organic fruit and vegetable, ocean-fresh fish, a game fishing contest, trips on the lagoon, nature trails and visits to local beauty spots... Not to mention a feast of traditional dances, songs and music.
A postage stamp designed to evoke the unique rural charm of this island fair!
