Description

OPT-NC is marking the 50th anniversary of the New Caledonia Ornithological Society (SCO) with this new 180 XPF stamp issue, designed by Jean-Richard Lisiak and depicting the Imperial Pigeon (Ducula goliath).

The SCO, a nonprofit association, is one of New Caledonia's oldest established environmental protection associations. Founded in 1965 with an initial membership of bird breeders or collectors, the SCO grew over time into a key player in the conservation and promotion of New Caledonia's wealth of avian species.

The association has been the local representative for BirdLife International (a global Partnership of NGOs) since 2001, and has worked tirelessly to preserve and safeguard wild birds and their natural habitats and, in particular, New Caledonia's Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA), focussing on the essential relationship between man and nature.

The SCO takes the lead in a wide range of awareness-raising and educational initiatives, is involved in the development of communication tools and birdwatching guides and regularly collaborates with local and international partners (institutions, research bodies, associations, tribes...). Field work is another key aspect of the SCO's work and includes ornithological surveys, studies of species under threat, monitoring and/or rebuilding various bird populations, eradicating introduced predators and combating invasive species.

You can contact and/or support the SCO by calling 23 33 42, emailing them at sco@sco.asso.nc or going to their Facebook page.
