Description

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, OPT-NC is issuing this new 110 XPF stamp featuring a design by Denis Vigier based on a photograph by Marc Le Chélard.

The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, one of President François Mitterand’s flagship architectural projects, was designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, winner of an invite-only international competition in 1991. Work on the Centre began in 1995 on an 8 hectare site, gifted by the municipality of Noumea and located on the Tina Peninsula.

An iconic masterpiece, the Cultural Centre was inaugurated in June 1998, 9 years after the death of Jean-Marie Tjibaou. Although it bears the name of the Tjibaou clan, contrary to common misconception, it has no exclusive personal link to Jean-Marie Tjibaou but has, from the start, been managed by the Agency for the Development of Kanak Culture (ADCK).

A state-owned institution until its transfer to New Caledonia in 2012, the ADCK-CCT was entrusted by the New Caledonian authorities with the tasks of researching, collecting, enhancing and promoting the Kanak cultural heritage, supporting and developing Kanak creative arts, encouraging the emergence of cultural practices and references inherent to New Caledonia, and of playing a central role in building and cultivating regional and international exchanges.

The ADCK-CCT is in charge of a Fund for Contemporary Kanak and Oceanian Art, established in 1992 and already endowed with over 2,000 works of art; it also provides facilities for visiting academics doing research into Pacific Region cultural traditions, and is committed to documenting and safeguarding New Caledonia's intangible cultural heritage.

Every year, the CCT schedules seasons of richly varied cultural initiatives: exhibitions, concerts, shows, conferences and events focussing on the discovery and sharing of art and culture. Since the Centre’s opening, over 1,750,000 people have visited its public spaces, galleries and gardens, with over 100,000 visitors recorded every year.
