The 170th Anniversary of the City of Nouméa
Nouméa, founded in 1854 under the name Port-de-France by Admiral Febvrier Despointes, celebrates its 170th anniversary this year. Situated on a peninsula surrounded by beautiful bays, the city has prospered due to its strategic location and natural resources. Renamed Nouméa in 1866, it has played a crucial role in the economic and social development of New Caledonia. As the capital, it is today the primary economic, cultural, and political heart of the archipelago.
A Cultural and Economic Center
Throughout its history, Nouméa has become a dynamic center, hosting numerous artistic and cultural institutions. Each year, for the past 50 years, the city celebrates its anniversary with a magnificent lantern release, a highly anticipated event by the Caledonians that illuminates the night sky and brings together residents and visitors for a festive evening. The city is also the main commercial and industrial hub, with modern infrastructures and an active port.
Since its founding, Nouméa has undergone remarkable transformations. From small scattered neighborhoods, it has become a modern metropolis with diverse architecture. The neighborhoods have expanded, friendly green and sports spaces have been developed, and the city has harmoniously integrated modernity and tradition.
Nouméa also stands out as a welcoming city for all, celebrating a diversity that reflects its cosmopolitan character. It brings together all the traditions and influences that compose the mosaic of New Caledonia.

Nouméa's docks have been completely renovated to revitalize the city center and waterfront. The development of the Jules Ferry docks, completed in 2021, has transformed this area into an attractive waterfront that reconnects the city center to the sea. The site includes colorful light effects reflecting in the harbor, making the docks an attractive place for tourism and the nightlife of Nouméans.
With its 170 years of history, Nouméa is a living testimony to the evolution and growth of New Caledonia. This commemorative stamp is a recognition of the city's importance and a tribute to its inhabitants, past and present, who have contributed to its development. By celebrating this anniversary, we pay homage to Nouméa's heritage and commit to preserving its legacy for future generations.
